Extended Essays

Extended Essay

The Extended Essay is a research paper of no more than 4,000 words which is written outside of class time. Designed to promote college level research and writing skills, time management, and intellectual ownership, a passing score on this essay is required for achieving the full IB Diploma.

IB Diploma students begin the EE process by identifying an IB subject area and topic of interest. It is highly recommended that the subject area be one in which the student is currently or has been enrolled in. Students will work in conjunction with a staff member who can serve as their advisor, but are ultimately responsible for crafting an appropriate research question, identifying and analyzing subject-specific sources, and writing an in depth study in answer to their question.

For successful completing of the Extended Essay, it is imperative that students remain in communication with their advisors and the coordinator, be mindful of due dates, and follow all Academic Integrity Policies.

Below is a copy of the IB subject brief for the extended essay. It can also be accessed as a pdf here.
